He could and would have worked for longer. He did not believe in retirement. He tried it once, and didn't like it. His expertise, life experience was far superior than anybody's in his workplace. He loved his work, and enjoyed it. He was in full capacity mentally and |
physically right till the end. I had a great aunt, who was frail, but mentally very alert at the age of 86, telling me stories about the old times. She outlived most of her family. Her frailty was a result of malnutrition during the war years, when her osteoporosis took hold. Back then we didn't hear about osteoporosis. We took it for granted that old people shrink These people had good genes, as we would see it today. They didn't

know take-away food either. They had basic diet; refined foods made with white flour were treats, not everyday consumed. They had lean times, when food was scarce, lived on a budget. They grew some of their own food. and raised chickens. They were part of an extended family with chores to do. younger generation to raise. Passing their knowledge and experience was a major asset to the family. |
